Arjay Stevens @ Raffles EmTheay

SRA’ART GALLERY WILL PAY HOMAGE AT EM THEAY, THE LEGENDARY AND BELOVED ROYAL BALLET DANCER, THROUGH AN EXHIBITION AND DANCE PERFORMANCES AT LE PHNOM 1929.

This coming Sunday, July 4th, Sra’Art will introduce a new exhibition at Le Phnom 1929 (Raffles Le Royal Phnom Penh) including photographs from Arjay Stevens, a dear friend of Em Theay, the Khmer classical dancer who had become a legend. Arjay immortalizes the belated master teaching during their many years of friendship. The profit from the artwork sales will go to Champey Academy of Arts. Champey is a non-profit school offering the youth of Phnom Penh free training in Cambodian traditional arts including dance, music, drawing, and painting. Champey’s mission is to inspire young people to preserve, protect and promote their nation’s culture which seems fitting with Em Theay’s life motto.

During the month of July, Sra’Art will organize live dance performances to pay tribute to this incredible woman who dedicated her life to her Art. In a letter to her family H.E. Hun Sen wrote: “Throughout her life, laywoman Master Em Theay dedicated her precious time to contribute to the promotion and preservation of our nation’s glorious cultural arts”.

Arjay Stevens, a German natural scientist turned art lover and photographer, became deeply interested in the arts of Southeast Asia since his first visit in 1996. From the beginning, the notable Khmer art was Steven’s focus. For more than twenty years, Stevens has taken hundreds of thousands of photographs in the Kingdom. Steven also released unique photobooks including “A century artist” dedicated to the Cambodian dancing master.

Since the beginning of June 2021, Sra’Art started to host monthly pop-up exhibitions at Le Phnom 1929 and weekly artsy activities during Raffles Le Royal’s signature brunch. Each month Sra’Art will showcase the work of an artist of the Cambodian contemporary Art Scene and a creative experience in line with the topic.

Sra’Art is proudly presenting a schedule of art events and exhibitions promoting a new cultural and inspiring dimension to Le Phnom 1929 new brunch offer. Every Sunday, the gallery will also present some artwork prints in limited edition, to allow each visitor to get a glance at the amazing diversity of Cambodia’s creative scene.

Sra’Art is a creative space dedicated to connecting Cambodian artists, art enthusiasts, and anyone curious to experience the exciting development of Cambodia’s vibrant new art scene.
