“Afraid of the Dark” Series
This series examines the negative stigma associated with dark skin in Cambodia. In a continent, where skin whitening and bleaching has become prevalent there are strong stereotypes casted against dark skinned people. Why are we afraid of the dark?
“Leak” in khmer can be a girls name or meaning “to hide”. This piece depicts a shy girl hiding her face as her bright smile shines. As a part of Hang’s series “Afraid of the Dark”, “Leak” portrays a girl who may have been teased for her dark skin. Words are thrown at her but she smiles and hides her true feelings. What do we deem as aesthetically beautiful and what weight does it carry?

Artist Bio
Jenna Hang is an emerging American artist who has been based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the past four years. Jenna studied Studio Art at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. She is inspired by the people of Cambodia and strives to portray their unique beauty in her oil paintings. She is particularly passionate about using her artwork to be a champion against racial prejudices. Her watercolors depict architectural scenes and street life that you will see day to day. Whether it be on a tuk tuk or walking the streets of Phnom Penh, Hang finds inspiration all around this city in old colonial buildings, chipped paint, coconuts and the intense beauty of the people. She skillfully aims to find a median between Realism and Impressionism. This can be seen in her use of bold colors contrasted with her attention to detail. Hang’s distinct style can be found in shops around Phnom Penh currently such as Ginger & Grace, Good Wood Design & Blonde Shop under her brand name “HONEYLIT”.

ផ្នែកមួយនៃកម្រងឯកសារនេះចង់បង្ហាញអំពីភាពអវិជ្ជមាននៃការមាក់ងាយដែលទាក់ទងនឹងពណ៍សម្បុលជាពិសេសស្បែកខ្មៅនៅកម្ពុជា។ នៅទ្វីបមួយ ទីណាដែលមានស្បែកសរ និងការធ្វើឪ្យស្បែកប្រែពីខ្មៅទៅសក្លាយទៅជារឿងទូទៅមួយ ដែលបាត់ទុកថាជាភាពរឹងមាំមួយក្នុងការប្រឆាំងនឹងមនុស្សស្បែកខ្មៅ។ ហេតុអ្វីបានជាយើងខ្លាចភាពងងឹត?
“Leak” ក្នងភាសារខ្មែរមានន័យថាឈ្មោះរបស់ ក្មេងស្រី ឬន័យថា“ លាក់ខ្លួន” ។ ក្នុងផ្នែកមូយនេះចង់បង្ហាញពីក្មេងស្រីដែលខ្មាស់អៀនលាក់មុខរបស់នាងពោលពេលទៅដោយស្នាមញញឹមស្រស់ថ្លារបស់នាង។ ផ្នែកមួយនៃផ្នត់គំណាត់របស់ Jenna “ការភ័យខ្លាចនៃភាពងងឹត”, “Leak” គឺជាក្មេងស្រី ម្នាក់ដែលត្រូវគេសើចចំអកចំពោះស្បែកខ្មៅរបស់នាង។ ពាក្យសំដីត្រូវបានគេនិយាយម៉ាកងាយដាក់នាងប៉ុនណាក៏ដោយ ប៉ុន្តែនាងនៅតែញញឹមហើយលាក់អារម្មណ៍ពិតរបស់នាង។

Jenna Hang គឺជាសិល្បករអាមេរិកាំងដែលកំពុង លេចធ្លោមួយរូបនៅទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញប្រទេសកម្ពុជា អស់រយៈពេល ៤ ឆ្នាំមកហើយ។ Jenna បានសិក្សា ស្ទូឌីយោសិល្បៈនៅមហាវិទ្យាល័យ Westmont នៅ Santa Barbara រដ្ឋកាលីហ្វ័រញ៉ា។ នាងទទួលបានការជំរុញចិត្តដោយប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាហើយខិតខំបង្ហាញពីសម្រស់ដ៏ពិសេសរបស់ពួកគេនៅក្នុងផ្ទាំងគំនូរប្រេងរបស់នាង។ នាងពិតជាងប់ងល់នឹងការប្រើប្រាស់ស្នាដៃសិល្បៈរបស់នាងមួយនេះណាស់ដើម្បីប្រឆាំងនឹងការរើសអើងជាតិសាសន៍។
