Isabella Myers is a book and paper artist from the United States. She is a current US Creative Arts Fulbright Grant recipient residing in a village in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia.

Artist Statement:
This piece is one in a series of paperworks made by hand from the Cambodian snay tree (Streblus asper). It uses a method of hand papermaking which evolves from my study of historical Khmer Buddhist kraing manuscripts in Kampong Cham Province. Today this collection of manuscripts are historical artifacts stored in a pagoda for safekeeping and no longer in use. Most manuscripts and religious objects were destroyed by the Khmer Rouge. Those which survived suffered in the aftermath of that period, leaving them badly damaged or vulnerable to looting. Only 2% of kraing manuscripts survive today.
The title of this work comes from a modern kraing manuscript; its colophon, written in poetic script, contains the scribe’s blessing of merit offered to the family who commissioned and donated the manuscript to Wat Bo in 1991. This piece is a monument to the act of papermaking and to the significance of craft in the cycle of merit.
Through observation of the extant manuscripts and support from local elders and craftspeople, I am recreating these papers for a series of sculptural paperworks. Though I am unable to read the text in the historical kraing manuscripts, I am inspired by the aesthetics of their use, re-use, and deterioration which I find beautiful and imbued with a meaning of its own. Using folding, tearing, delamination, wax, charcoal, and thread as drawing implements, I am creating large-scale mixed media pieces with my handmade snay papers that are meditations on the relic as a form.
They are monuments to a craft now forgotten and pay homage to the scribes, performers, and caretakers of these 100-year old artifacts. I want to challenge the viewer’s notions of the book, text, and their societal value and to address the dichotomy between utilitarian and sacred objects.
