This series of intimate portraits represents Lauren Iida’s experience of life in Cambodia where she has chosen to live for the last twelve years. Every composition carefully depicts her feeling of admiration for the graceful strength and the unwavering will of Cambodian women. The gestures in the work are stationary but appear in motion, a celebration to highlight the titanic daily work of Cambodia’s women, which often goes unrecognized. Iida’s women become symbolic of all women, herself as woman, and the stoic vulnerability of women around the world.

CURRENT ARTIST PRACTICE

Lauren iida creates entire worlds carved from paper with a small knife. The white paper is transformed by hand into a multi-dimensional sculpture, constructed layer by layer, enhances by washes pigment and textures. Her work is accentuated by the play of light and shadow to tell the universal stories of everyday life. She borrows from her family’s Japanese American heritage this ancestral art of papercut, or “kiri,” and sensitively captures frozen moments celebrating the minutiae of Cambodian life.

SHORT BIO

Artist and founder of Open Studio Cambodia, Lauren Iida, originally
from Seattle, USA, has been living in Cambodia over twelve years.
After she graduated at Cornish College of the Arts (2014), she has
been recipient of the Artist Trust GAP Grant and received an Art
Matters fellowship in 2017.
Her work has been collected by the City of Seattle and she has been
commissioned for permanent public art by the City of Shoreline (2016)
and the City of Seattle (2019). Iida is represented by Sra’Art Gallery, Artxchange Gallery and has exhibited her work at King Street Station, the Mayor’s Gallery at Seattle City Hall, Shoreline City Hall, Virago Gallery, Tacoma Spaceworks, Sculpture Northwest, the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

សិល្បៈបច្ចុប្បន្ន

Lauren iida បង្កើតពិភពលោកទាំងមូល ដោយកាំបិតតូចមួយឆ្លាក់លើក្រដាស។ ផ្ទាំងក្រដាសសត្រូវបានកែច្នៃដោយដៃឲ្យទៅជារូបចម្លាក់ multi-dimensional ដែលផ្គុំឡើងជាស្រទាប់ៗ ហើយលាងសម្អាតដោយប្រើសារធាតុពណ៌។ ការងាររបស់គាត់ ឆ្លុះបញ្ចាំងតាមរយៈការលេងពន្លឺ និងស្រមោល ដើម្បីបង្ហាញពីជីវិតប្រចាំថ្ងៃលើពិភពលោក។ គាត់ប្រើទំនៀមទម្លាប់សិល្បៈនៃការកាត់ក្រដាសនេះ ឫហៅថា “គីរី” ដែលជាកេរ្តិ៍តំណែលដូនតានៃគ្រួសារជប៉ុនកាត់អាមេរិចរបស់គាត់ផ្ទាល់ យកមកបង្កើតនៅរូបភាពនៃនាទីជីវិតរបស់ប្រជាជនកម្ពុជា។កម្រងរូបភាពទាំងនេះតំណាងឱ្យបទពិសោធន៍ជីវិតរបស់ Lauren iida នៅក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ទីកន្លែងដែលគាត់បានជ្រើសរើសរស់នៅរយៈពេល ១២ឆ្នាំចុងក្រោយនេះ។ រាល់ការរួមបញ្ចូលទាំងឡាយ បានឆ្លុះបង្ហាញពីអារម្មណ៍កោតសរសើររបស់គាត់ចំពោះកម្លាំងគុណធម៌ និងឆន្ទៈដ៏ខ្ជាប់ខ្ជួនរបស់ស្ត្រីកម្ពុជា។ កាយវិការនៅក្នុងសិល្បៈមានលក្ខណៈនឹងថ្កល់ ប៉ុន្តែរំលេចឡើងជាចលនា នៃការអបអរសាទរពីកិច្ចការងារឥតឈប់ឈរប្រចាំថ្ងៃរបស់ស្ត្រីនៅកម្ពុជា ដែលពុំសូវមានអ្នកទទួលស្គាល់។ ស្ត្រីក្នុងស្នាដៃរបស់iida ក្លាយជានិមិត្តរូបនៃស្ត្រីទាំងអស់ ទាំងរូបខ្លួននាងផ្ទាល់ជាស្ត្រី និងទស្សនៈវិជ្ជានៃភាពងាយរងគ្រោះរបស់ស្ត្រីនៅជុំវិញពិភពលោក។
